We would like to thank our guest speaker Simon Letts for the talk he gave. Simon is the Leader of Southampton City Council and was Labour’s candidate for Southampton Itchen in the 2017 General Election. Itchen is now the most marginal seat in England with Labour reducing a Tory majority of over 3,000 to just 31 votes. He spoke about the Election campaign and the issues raised and how he saw the way forward.
He also focused on how his council manages in the ‘land of difficult choices’, forced on them by repeated Tory austerity cuts, reflected in increasing numbers of ‘looked-after children’, a £120 million reduction in their budget combined with a large increase in demand on their adult social care budget which meant large cuts. Libraries, swimming pools and Sure Start centres have been threatened (but with careful, imaginative management, preserved).
An interesting talk that was much appreciated by the members.
