Bring Southern Water back into public ownership sign the petition. In July 2021 Southern Water was fined a record £90m after pleading guilty to thousands of unlawful discharges of untreated sewage into the Solent and all along the south coast. The discharges, which took place from 2010 to 2015, caused major harm to protected wetland sites, marine conservation sites and oyster beds, and posed a significant threat to human health.Despite promises from Southern Water to clean up its act, numerous discharges of untreated sewage continue, with seven beaches on the Isle of Wight unfit for bathing at one stage during the summer of 2021.
