We’re campaigning to support Unite members working as low paid cleaners and mess hands on MOD contracts across a number of Naval bases in Portsmouth and Gosport. We need your help.
Last year management imposed a reduction in their working year from 52 weeks to 50 – so they only get paid for 50 weeks of the year with no chance to make up the difference.
When staff raised grievances, they were told that many workers had welcomed the reduction in their salaries as it meant they didn’t have to pay for child care or adult care during the two weeks they would not get paid! Management just didn’t care that that staff won’t have any money to feed their families, pay their rents and other housing costs, heat their homes and pay all the other bills for those two weeks.
This from a hugely wealthy multinational company that pays millions of pounds in dividends to shareholders every year. But you can join the fight.
Join Unite and the Gosport Labour party on Friday 23rd March 2.00pm for a demonstration and march.
We will be gathering at the top of the High Street near the Ferry and marching down to the office where the local Tory MP Caroline Dinenage will be holding an afternoon surgery where we will present a petition and ask her to raise the issue with the Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson.
